Amman, Jordan, November 27, 2017 (Petra) - The Jordan Armed Forces, Mafraq Development Company, and the US Safe Ports Company on Monday signed an initial agreement to set up a logistical airport and center in the Mafraq Development Zone, 80km northeast of Amman.
The first agreement with the Jordan Armed Forces, which was signed by Chief of Staff Strategic Planning Brigadier General Nassar Athamneh and President and Chief Executive Officer of Safe Ports Lucy Duncan, aims to provide logistical facilities at the King Hussein Air College in Mafraq and establish a logistical airport that works in parallel with the land port that will be used for commercial purposes.
The project aims to attract shipping companies and enable the airport to receive civilian aircraft for shipping purposes in addition to the exchange of expertise in engineering, operation, and maintenance.
The US company will launch studies and set up the guidelines for partnership with the Jordan Armed Forces.
The second agreement, which was signed by Director General of the Mafraq Development Company Nayef Al Bakhit, aims to promote the Mafraq development Zone to be a logistical hub for reconstruction in Iraq and Syria.
Under the deal, the US company will benefit from investment privileges and exemptions as well as the advanced infrastructure in the development zone.
State Minister for Investment Affairs Muhannad Shihadeh, who attended the signing ceremony, said the airport and the center will push development forward and serve the national economy, in particular, and the region, in general, due to its strategic location.
He affirmed that the project will contribute to attracting investments, especially in the logistical field and providing job and trade opportunities.
The CEO of Safe Ports said the establishment of the airport and the center will contribute to accelerating development. She also pointed to the King Hussein Bin Talal development zone in Mafraq and the investment privileges it offers.
